Talk about a weird show. The premise of this new FX show, adapted from a popular Australian TV show, is that Ryan is depressed and even suicidal until his attractive neighbor asks him to watch her dog, Wilfred. The weird part is that he sees the dog as a grown Australian man dressed in a dog costume and has long conversations with him. This new relationship is what forces Ryan to take a look at his life and reconsider it. (Wilfred is played by the show’s co-creator, Jason Gann, who also played the dog in the Australian series.)
I liked Elijah Wood, which made me tune into this show in the first place, but having watched a couple episodes, I’m not sure what to think about it. It’s not nearly as laugh out loud as it should be for how strange it is. Occasionally man-Wilfred pulls a dog stunt that looks mildly funny, but otherwise there’s nothing really special about it.
For the moment, the show is relegated to my “watch if there’s nothing else to watch” list. Also known as my “watch if I’ve watched everything else” list.
