This episode of Grey’s was great. The merger was a great way to infuse some new life and some realistic drama into the show. Everything that happens, even though it’s not particularly different than what normally happens, suddenly has higher stakes. Everything matters now. The fear of being fired because of downsizing…I mean, Lexie smashes packages full of blood because she’s rushing around, Izzie returns to work three weeks early, Christina tries to suck up to Arizona in pedes which is definitively not where she belongs…
None of our main casters get fired (except perhaps Callie and Izzie though neither is confirmed, Izzie says she’s safe but the way she was acting I’m not so sure) by the end of the episode but Derek and the Chief are barely on speaking terms. Callie and Arizona are officially a couple now.Derek comforts the people who were fired (all via email) while the Chief goes home.
Surgery wise: they reattach a baby’s arm which is both creepy and awesome all at once. A paranoid schizophrenic and his mother are brought in after a car accident. The mother needs search for a thin wall on her aorta while her son has an injured wrist. While Lexie tries to treat him he freak out and attacks her and then escapes only to fall down the stairs and make him need surgery as well. Christina talks to some kids who don’t need any surgery and she’s disappointed. Izzie does a five hour surgery with Derek while Alex (who’s gotten cutely parental) makes sure she takes her medicine. (Izzie also got a horrible new wig but she finally has to take it off mid-surgery because it makes her sweat).
There was nothing brilliant about this episode but I really enjoyed it.
